I never imagined my life would revolve around the sterile walls of a NICU, but here I am, standing in a place where no parent ever dreams of finding themselves. The road to motherhood wasn’t easy for me. Before I even entered the NICU, I had heartbreak after heartbreak, multiple miscarriages that left me questioning if I would ever get to hold a baby in my arms. When the day finally came, it wasn’t the joyous, peaceful moment I had imagined it would be. Instead, I found myself standing in the NICU, looking at my tiny baby surrounded by tubes, wires, and machines. I knew from the start that it was going to be a long journey. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and now, over 400 days later, we're still here. Baby A came into this world at just 24 weeks and 1 day. Being born so early, she developed severe respiratory issues that resulted in needing a tracheostomy and ventilator support. I doubted my ability to care for such a medically complex baby. But slowly I’ve learned what works for me and how I could become a better advocate for her. I keep notes of everything that happens on a daily basis, which makes it easier to refer back to when I need to find important information. I research terms and procedures to better understand what’s happening. The NICU has become our second home. Through this time, the NICU staff has become so much more than caregivers, they’ve become our friends and our extended family. They’ve been with us through every setback and celebrated every small victory. They offer comfort on the toughest days and have made the NICU feel less like a clinical environment, creating unforgettable memories for both me and my baby. Every day, I watch my baby fight through the struggles of breathing, healing, and growing, and it’s her resilience that fuels mine. Through it all, she still manages to be a happy baby. I've learned so much from her and am incredibly grateful that she chose us to be her parents.
