Shriya Kane, MD
I am a general surgery resident at UIHC. I was born and raised in India and have had unique opportunities to see healthcare in different parts of the developing and developed world. Everywhere that I have been, I always found that the stories of the people I interacted with changed me almost as much as the medicine did. Through this project, I hope to share with you the power of storytelling and the many ways in which it can make your healthcare journey less isolating. In this community of tales, I hope that you find the perspective, support and camaraderie that I continue to find in my journey in healthcare.

I also completed a Fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. I practice Pediatric Surgery at UI Health Care, and my research interests include shared decision making and patient autonomy in complex surgical decision making.
Laura Shinkunas, MS
I am a Research Specialist in the Program in Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. I have been working with Dr. Carlisle and her research team for over five years on projects focused on collaborative engagement between parents and surgeons in complex surgical decision making. Through interviews that our research team have conducted with parents of children undergoing complex surgeries, I have learned about the power of storytelling. I am really excited about this website, and I hope that you find it beneficial.
