This tool is intended to assist clinicians in the initial evaluation and management of infants and children with umbilical hernias.

Umbilical hernia is a relatively common problem in infants and young children.  In recent years, the time frame for recommended referral for umbilical hernia repair has changed, as recurrence rates may be higher if surgery is performed very early.  This tool is to help determine the best time to refer to a pediatric surgeon, along with discussion with patients and their parents/guardians.
